POWA is a Christian, non-political, and non-sectional non-governmental organization (NGO) registered with the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Currently, its offices are located in Nakulabye, Rubaga Division. Established in 2014 as a community-based organization (CBO) known as Hellen’s Daughters, POWA has recently transitioned to NGO status.
POWA is dedicated to addressing the social and economic challenges faced by vulnerable women and girls living in slum areas. The organization’s initiatives focus on issues such as HIV/AIDS, physical and emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and economic disempowerment. Since its inception in 2010, POWA has empowered over 5,000 women and girls socially, emotionally, physically, and economically through a variety of projects and activities.
01.
— HELLENS DAUGHTERS SKILLING PROGRAM
Women and girls in the community are equipped with a diverse range of skills to support their livelihoods, including tailoring, hairdressing, soap making, and crafting jewelry and other handmade items
02.
— POWA MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT
Adolescent girls in the community are provided with reusable sanitary pads and receive training on how to make them. This initiative significantly contributes to their protection from sexual abuse.
03.
— AMANYI G’OMUKYALA WEEKLY PROGRAM
We offer a weekly program where abused women gather at our offices for prayer, counseling, and psychosocial support. This provides an opportunity for them to encourage one another and share a cup of porridge.
04.
— POWA GIRL CHILD EDUCATION
Our initiative is dedicated to raising school fees and providing scholastic materials for girls whose parents are unable to afford their education. In many households with limited resources, the education of the girl child is often sacrificed in favor of the boy’s continued schooling.
05.
— WOMAN ARISE CONFERENCES
POWA organizes an annual conference that unites women from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
06.
— POWA HEALTH CENTER
This upcoming project aims to offer affordable medical services to children and women within the community
